Wanderlust Wednesday-Croatia

I’m going to be honest.  It wasn’t very long ago that had someone offered me a trip to Croatia I would have turned them down.  Not knowing very much about the country, other than they were at war in the early 90’s, I never would have considered going there. But since I’ve become a travel advisor, I realize just how wrong I would be to turn down the chance to go.

Croatia is a country encompassing more than 1000 islands on the Adriatic Sea. With it’s blue green waters and amazing mountains, Croatia can satisfy anyone’s appetite for adventure. All seven of their UNESCO Heritage Sites 800px-dubrovnik_croatiaare easily reached by the most popular cities like Dubrovnik or Split.

Dubrovnik is probably the most popular city and it’s easy to see why.  With it’s medieval walls and cobblestone streets, it’s been a popular destination for a while, but since “Game of Thornes” is filmed there it is has been steadily gaining ground.  dubrov

For nature lovers, there are also several national parks in Croatia.  In Plitvice National Park you can relax in thermal spas.  Krka National Park boasts seven waterfalls and Roman catacombs and in Brijuni National Park you can tour  Roman and Byzantine ruins, a 1,600-year-old olive tree and even dinosaur footprints.

Another popular city is Split.  I can’t think of any other reason to visit than it’s absolutely breathtaking. A walking tour around the city, including a tour of a retirement palace built around the 4th century for  Roman Emperor Diacletian,  provides history fans with lots of opportunity for photos. split7-1365x768split

And finally, the food and wine captivates many.  With vineyards along the Danube to rival any in France, you can take a trip into wine country and sample from local wineries. Of course, being in the Mediterranean lends itself to seafood of the freshest quality.  pelje

I have not been there…yet; so I can’t take credit for the pictures (thus my wanderlust LOL) but I know how I’m going to get there.  Viking Ocean and River Cruises can take you to Croatia and the Mediterranean relaxed and in style.  Viking offers onboard cultural events, regional dining options and local tour guides for a truly all-inclusive vacation for the beginner and seasoned traveler alike.

  1. Great article! I am going to the Balkans in October and these pictures are so inspiring! I am not taking a Viking cruise this trip, although I know the company well. I will be visiting wineries mostly as we live in Napa Valley and work in the wine business. But we will take some side trips to Plitvice and Krka. Thanks for sharing!
